Defending the Rule of LawAs recently as last month, Attorney General Eric Holder was in the news defending prosecuting terror suspects in federal criminal courts rather than using military commissions. Military commissions have been criticized since their inception as not abiding by constitutional requirements or regular criminal procedure. During his election campaign Barack Obama promised to change all that and last month it looked like he was going to keep to his word. Pressure from opponents might change all that though. Recently, the President has reportedly been wavering in his resolve to stand up for the American rule of law. It seems odd that some people would prefer to stick to military commissions where only 3 terror cases have been successfully handled as opposed to the federal court system which has successfully handled over 300 terror cases. The ACLU has recently taken out a full-page ad in the New York Times urging the President to stand by his word and do the constitutional and more effective thing. You can urge the President to do just that through the ACLU action center . Please call or email the White House and ask President Obama to stand by Eric Holder's decision. It is the right thing to do. |
